Dog Policy At The Abbey Hotel including Assistance / Service Dogs

Well behaved pet dogs are accepted at The Abbey Hotel for an additional nightly charge.

Guests must request a “dog accepted” room in advance when booking.

Pet dogs are not allowed in the Lounge, Bar or Restaurant, or on any hotel furniture in public areas or bedrooms. If guests wish to have a meal with their pet dog, the only option is Room Service.

Dogs must not be left unattended in bedrooms.

There will be a charge of £20 per night to have your dog/s in the bedroom. We allow no more than 2 reasonably sized dogs per room.

An additional night’s room charge will be applied should deep cleaning of the room be necessary.

However, registered Assistance / Working and Service Dogs such as Guide Dogs and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People are permitted in all areas of the Hotel, and no fees will be applied for these dogs.

No other types of pets are accepted, neither in bedrooms or public areas of The Abbey hotel.

The following guidelines must be followed at all times to ensure the comfort of fellow GUESTS

  1. Guests must register their dog at reception on arrival.
  2. Guests must take full responsibility for their dog and staff must not be expected to assist with the care of them in any way
  3. Dogs must be well mannered and kept on a lead at all times when in the public areas of the Hotel and on the hotel grounds.
  4. All dogs must be controlled by their owners at all times. Assistance Dogs must be under control, whether this is by the means of a leash, hand gestures or voice control.
  5. Guests must not allow their dog to use the hotel gardens/grounds as a toilet and are fully responsible for cleaning up after their dogs in the case of an accident.
  6. Guests are fully responsible for any noise disruption caused by their dog and any damage caused by the dog will be charged.
  7. Owners of badly-behaved dogs, will be asked to leave the Hotel.

What is an Assistance Dog?

  • (a) a dog which has been trained to guide a blind person;
  • (b) a dog which has been trained to assist a deaf person;June 2025
  • (c) a dog which has been trained by a prescribed charity to assist a disabled person who has a disability that consists of epilepsy or otherwise affects the person’s mobility, manual dexterity, physical coordination or ability to lift, carry or otherwise move everyday objects;
  • (d) a dog of a prescribed category which has been trained to assist a disabled person who has a disability of a prescribed kind, for example, Anxiety.

Assistance dogs:

  • are highly trained
  • will not wander freely around the premises
  • will sit or lie quietly on the floor next to its owner
  • are trained to go to the toilet on command and so are unlikely to foul in a public place
  • are mostly recognisable by the ID Tags or the harness or identifying dog jacket or slip lead they wear.

When traveling with an assistance dog, where it is not apparent this is the case, you should be prepared to be asked questions about the assistance they provide by the hotel staff.

Staff must not to be expected to help perform any of the tasks related to the Assistance Dog such as taking it out to relieve itself, feeding, handling etc.

Following the Rules of the Hotel

Under the ADUK, persons with a disability do have a number of rights. However, they will still be expected to follow the rules of the Hotel, as all other guests.
