Discover Morgan Motors with the Abbey Hotel
The Morgan Motor Company is one of Malvern’s treasures, and a great place for car enthusiasts to visit. Morgan Motor’s have opened up their factory and a museum dedicated to one of the last British sports car manufacturers, making it a must-visit place for tourists in Worcestershire.
Founded in 1909, Morgan Motors came into being when Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan decided to manufacture his own cars in the town of Malvern, Worcestershire. The iconic three-wheeler (the Runabout) was originally invented for his personal use and was not intended to be a commercially used vehicle until he received a positive reaction towards the car.
The Roundabout was developed further, becoming one of the fastest accelerating vehicles of its time in 1910. In 1913, it won the Grand Prix in France, destroying the strong opposition from the four wheeled cars that competed. As a result, the three-wheeler became the base model for the Grand Prix, Aero, and Sports models between 1913 and 1926.
In 1921, the classic four-seater Roundabout was released, allowing for a more spacious vehicle. It was not until the late 1940s that Morgan Motors released a four wheeled car. Revealed in Paris and London, it was an immediate success and the car still holds the record for the longest produced model of car (the 4-4). The three-wheeler remained in production until 1952.
It wasn’t until the year 2000 that they released a new design – the first since 1948. Featuring an aluminium frame and chassis, it was a great success, with a special version being launched in 2008. These special editions were sold for £110,000 each as there were only around a hundred produced. In 2011, the three-wheeler came into the public eye once more, and their success has continued to grow even today.
Being a rare sight in Britain today, visiting the covetable sports car factory should top any visitors list. There are very few car manufacturers that still build their cars in Britain, and to visit the factory and museum is to continue supporting this iconic manufacturer. With an informative visit to look forward to, tourists and car enthusiasts alike are sure to enjoy this exciting adventure through the history of one of the greatest manufacturers of cars in British history – and all right outside the Abbey hotel.
